☀️ Goodbye, Camp Jitters! How to Get Your Little One Ready for Summer Fun 🏕️

School is officially winding down, and summer is knocking on the door! That means it’s time for sunshine, sunscreen, and getting your little one ready for camp. 🎒✨

It is completely normal for kids (and parents!) to feel a little bit of apprehension when a big routine change is on the horizon. But don't worry, here are some tips and tricks to help you turn those camp jitters into camp cheers! 📣

🥰 What We Love About Camp (The Toddler & Preschool Edition)

How does camp fit into a preschooler’s world? Camp is all about structured fun. It gives kids a chance to learn from new adults and explore a fresh environment. 🌲🎨

Here is just a taste of what your little camper has to look forward to:

  • Fun traditions (silly songs and camp spirit! 🎶)

  • Brand new friendships 👯‍♂️

  • Splashing and playing outside ☀️

  • Messy arts and crafts 🎨

  • New sports and games ⚽

🤔 Having Second Thoughts? Signs Your Child is Ready

Are you staring at that registration form wondering, "Are they actually ready for this?" Here are a few signs that your child is primed to join the fun at day camp:

  • They’ve started playing with others, not just next to them. 🧸 While young toddlers prefer parallel play, older kiddos start sharing toys and playing make-believe together. If your child is making this shift, they’ll love camp activities!

  • They’ve already crushed daycare or preschool. 🏫 If they’ve been in a group setting, camp will feel familiar. Plus, camp counselors are experts at making activities developmentally appropriate for their age group.

  • Alternatively... they’ve never been to preschool. 💡 If your child has been home with you, camp is actually the perfect easy going way to learn that other adults can be excellent caregivers and role models. You have to start somewhere, so it might as well be somewhere fun!

🛠️ 6 Parent-Tested Ways to Bust the Camp Jitters

If your child is feeling hesitant, you can help them navigate those big feelings before day one. Here is your ultimate camp-prep toolkit:

1. Normalize their feelings ❤️

Ask them how they feel about camp. It’s important to let them know that it is okay to be scared. Validate them by saying, "It's totally normal to feel nervous about trying something new."

2. Give them the "Power to Choose" ⚡

Give them a sense of control over the situation by letting them make some choices:

  • Let them pick out their camp backpack or water bottle.

  • Have them help you pack their daily snacks and lunch. 🥪

  • If the camp schedule has options, let them choose their activities. 🖍️

3. Tell a "Mirror Me" Story 📖

Kids love stories, especially when they can relate to them. Try telling a tale about a character going through the exact same thing:

"Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Emma who really didn't want to go to camp..."

Show how Emma was brave, kept an open mind, and ended up making a great new friend. This helps your child see a blueprint for turning negativity into positivity!

4. Practice with Role-Play 🧸

Grab their favorite stuffed animals and act out a day at camp. Let Mr. Bear be the counselor and Elephant be the new friend. You can also use this time to practice skills they might be nervous about (like kicking a soccer ball or opening their lunchbox) in the safety of your backyard.

5. Take a Pre-Camp Field Trip 🚗

If possible, drive by or visit the camp before day one. Let them see the playground and space so they can visually picture themselves playing there.

6. Mirror Your Confidence 😎

Children are emotional sponges. They read your cues! If you show your child that you are confident in the camp leaders and confident in their ability to handle it, they will model your behavior. Smile, keep drop-off positive, and remind them that they are safe and going to have a blast.

🌅 Reflect and Reset

After that first day, check in! 🛋️ Ask them:

  • "How did it go?"

  • "Did you surprise yourself and have a great time?"

  • "What can we do to make tomorrow even better?"

Let’s all have a super fun summer with no camp jitters! ☀️💛
